How Gullible Can You Be?

Home

I was completely baffled after a friend sent me an email with a simple card trick attached.  The PowerPoint file purported to be from magician David Copperfield and claimed to be able to read my mind.  In the presentation, I was shown six cards and asked to chose one of them and concentrate on it.

Then the cards were removed, and the magician told me to look at the next set of cards, and I would see that the one I had chosen had been removed.  I tried it out, and it worked. So I thought, “It had a one in six chance of being right.” So I tried it again, focusing on a different card this time, and once more my card was missing—then again with the same result. So I called my friend and told him that I couldn’t figure out how the trick worked. He told me that he was completely baffled, too, and that’s why he had sent it to me. I was in a hurry, so I posted the file on my web site and asked some email list friends to help me figure it out.

It wasn't long before I got the answer.
